This tool analyzes product ingredients using a damage-based porosity model. The scoring system ranges from -100 to 100:
High Porosity Score indicates how well a product works for damaged hair (high porosity in the damage-based model). This scoring is based on scientific research about what damaged hair needs.
Low Porosity Score indicates how “light” a product is (low in heavy emollients like oils and butters). This is useful for identifying lightweight products, but remember: low porosity (healthy, undamaged hair) doesn't necessarily need light products. Product choice should be based on curl pattern, strand thickness, and density, not just porosity.
These scores do not apply to products for occasional use like clarifying treatments and deep conditioners
High porosity products should ideally have plenty of conditioning ingredients that help fill in the hair cuticle and protect the hair from drying out.
This score indicates how “light” a product is (low in heavy emollients). Products that score well are water-based and low in the following ingredients:
Note: Low porosity (healthy, undamaged hair) doesn't automatically need light products. Product choice depends on curl pattern, strand thickness, and density. This score simply identifies lightweight formulations.
